Darrow got to taste the grapes that make the Da Vero Sangiovese wine. (Not sure how to spell that!) I was surprised to see any grapes on the vines as most others have been picked- it is harvest and crush time. We are part of the DaVero olive oil club, and were up at the farm for a tour and lunch.
The day was perfect, amazing food, beautiful fall day in Healdsburg.

If there was an "I heart Healdsburg" bumper sticker, I would put it on my car. I just love it up there. I only was up in the wine country for a few hours, but it was enough to make me feel like I had gotten away. (I would have had more time if I had not spent two hours in a broken down Cal Train. ) I did not get to eat in any of my favorite restaurants, but this is what I did do : Eat a roasted garlic clove, and a sandwich at Oakville Grocery, taste wine at Stonestreet, Robert Young and Stryker Sonoma. I really like Robert Young, a small, family run vineyard. I bought a bottle of olive oil at StoneStreet. (I do not expect it to be as good as Davero! ) Healdsburg is amazing in the fall. I hope to get back up there before the rains start !
Being up in Sonoma, I want to eat good food. However, with four kids, I am pretty limited on where we can bring them and what they will eat. (I am not one of those Moms that will bring my kids to a place and destroy the atmosphere for others- see what a martyr I am ) There are too many choices...but I found this site that has all the menus. Now I can order take out from Zin or Santi for me and David, and find a better option for the kids. We had a great pizza dinner last night at diVine Pizza. The kids got to make their own pizzas, and I enjoyed an artichoke and roasted garlic, cheese less pizza. I clearly have to plan a trip up here sans kids to enjoy some of the fine cuisine and wines.
The kids are all packing to head up to Healdsburg for our annual end of year trip. We are always prepared for rain, and do not expect to be able to enjoy many wine country picnics--but a flood warning, that is a bit severe. I often joke about being up in the cold North Bay while some of my friends are enjoying Hawaiian sun, but I am not sure if I want to have evacuation pictures up on my vox today. Can you just picture us all helping to fill sand bags ?
Healdsburg has become the place my family goes to escape from our hurried daily life. We hang out in the house, play games and eat good food. I do stop by a vineyard and select a wine to enjoy during my stay. I also select an olive oil to dip bread into. There is quite a selection of local olive oils, each with a distinct flavor. With four kids, we do not visit the amazing restaurants on a daily basis, but we do stock up on local produce. I was hoping to at least trek on over to the other valley, (Napa) and hit Mustards with the gang. The kids are looking forward to a visit to Powell's Candy Store, and of course, just hanging out with the family. Being unscheduled, no playdates, no work is a much welcome change. (We will of course have internet acces, unless the storm washes it away. )
In the meantime, David and I are trying to decide if it is safe for us to journey to the Sonoma Valley. The kids will be really disappointed if we do not leave-- they love Healdsburg. However, we would prefer not to be on the evening news tonight.Oh, one interesting fact I realized last night. To pack for a mere 4 days, for a family of six, we will need 24 outfits. That is scary. I will also be packing rain boots- that would be twelve boots. Good thing we have a mini van. Though we may need a boat...
